Deep groove is the number one priority on Indivisible, the latest collection of original melodic instrumental jazz by Brooklyn based keyboardist/composer/producer Bennett Paster. Each song explores a different flavor of groove- from 5/4 swing to funky 70s samba, from New Orleans to Nordic open 8th, and onwards to funk, country waltz, fusion, surf and beyond- this collection takes the listener on a tour of styles, drawing connections between contrasting rhythms through constant focus on groove. Though recorded together in two sessions at Paster’s Brooklyn Wash & Dry Studio, each song has its own sonic identity to match its style. The magic is how this group of musicians- many with 20+ years of playing together- draw this collection of diverse songs together into one cohesive album. This is Indivisible.

The disc is a broad-based modern jazz recording showcasing my latest compositions and arrangements for jazz quintet and sextet.  Joined by six of my absolute favorite instrumentalists, we effortlessly integrate swing with Latin and Brazilian rhythms to forge a contemporary, accessible style.  Our group interplay and unwavering melodicism render a rich, eminently listenable music that will draw you in and bring you along on our journey.

Grupo Yanqui

Gregory Ryan and I share a love for modern Afro-Cuban and Afro-Latin jazz. Grupo Yanqui is the band we founded in 2000 to play our original music that’s influences start with these styles and extend into Brazilian, funk and R&B and elsewhere.

Paster, Ryan & Hall

The jazz piano trio is classic because it works so darned well!  Acoustic piano, acoustic bass and drums can create an almost orchestral range of dynamics and colors.  Paster, Ryan and Hall, featuring bassist Gregory Ryan and drummer Keith Hall is our take on this timeless format.  Our years of playing and touring together have rendered us a trio that thinks together- and swings together- as one.

Invisible Horizon

(Paster, Ryan & Hall, featuring Chris Cheek: 2006, Self-Released)

Bennett Paster (piano), Chris Cheek (tenor Sax), Gregory Ryan (bass), Keith Hall (drums)

The “Good Feeling” is back! My second CD with Gregory Ryan and Keith Hall emphatically proves it. The trio’s second release showcases our continuing development as a trio and features original music by each of us as well as three new arrangements of standards. True to form, this recording features clarion sonic-fidelity, inspired performances and grooves guaranteed to make you feel good.  Renowned tenor saxophonist Chris Cheek contributes his unique lyricism to three tracks.

The debut CD by Paster, Ryan & Hall, Skyline features original music by all three of us as well as arrangements of some favorite standards. This trio swings hard, but we also cover significantly more ground, incorporating R&B, funk and Latin grooves into our music.

The Undoing

Sonic wizard and guitarist John Cabán and I co-lead this funky-rock instrumental trio in which I play Hammond organ, synth-bass and a cornucopia of vintage keyboards. Organic! plays live improvised compositions. Each performance features spontaneous new music that is fresh but rooted in the tradition of 70’s instrumental funk and R&B. The music is accessible- fun and funky. Together we speak an intuitive harmonic and melodic dialogue. Deep, greasy grooves provoke eclectic tempo shifts and sudden dynamic changes. Organic! has been developing this explosive musical synergy for over 10 years.

The first CD I ever played on is in many ways still one of my absolute favorites.  Matt Stone, WhyNot Jansveld, Jamie Moore and I wrote and co-wrote the songs on this super-duper-funkalicious album.  Go ahead and dance, I dare you not to…
